I wrote this back in mid-July and never published:
We had the 18 week ultrasound at MGH on July 11th. Baby looked healthy and was very active according to the technician (HB.2 living up to its name). We asked the technician to write down baby’s gender and put it in a sealed envelope. I tried to think of something more clever than a cupcake revealing either pink or blue filling inside, but couldn’t come up with anything more fun than that (who doesn’t like a good cupcake with filling?!). I dropped the envelope off at a local baker on Friday afternoon and they said they could have the cupcakes ready by the next morning. Saturday ended up being a very busy day for me (bridal shower and bachelorette party in NH) so we decided to wait until Sunday to do the reveal since my parents were already going to be in the area dropping off some of Jeff’s storage items at his new house. They brought lunch over and after a few sandwiches Pete and I both bit into our own cupcakes and saw BLUE. Another boy! It was really fun finding out the sex this time around. I feel like we actually got to enjoy that part of the surprise more this time around – having a baby is surprising enough in and of itself that we weren’t really focused on the gender at the time of delivery – we were just happy Noah arrived in good health. So now we get to re-use all the clothes and toys and shoes, which is pretty relieving. I really did think it was a girl because I felt so much worse this pregnancy than when I was pregnant with Noah. Luckily I am feeling much better now in my second trimester!
We had the normal 18 week appointment with another doctor after the ultrasound. I think I weighed 137lbs so only up 5 pounds or so. The doctor noted that the placenta was somewhat covering the opening of the cervix (called partial placenta previa) and recommended pelvic rest for now and to have a follow up ultrasound in the second trimester to see if the placenta moves as the uterus grows. I will be moving practices to Emerson hospital which will be super convenient appointment-wise being that I work right next door to Emerson Hospital!
Here are a couple pics of Noah getting in on the cupcake fun:
