I had my first appointment with the Concord OB practice on August 14th.  I only had to wait a few minutes to be called in, versus having to wait upwards of an hour at MGH, which was very nice.  They decided to do an ultrasound at this appointment just to have images on file and to follow up on MGH’s note about the partial placenta previa.  Everything looked great with the baby and he was very photogenic according to the technician – I think she said something like “babies like this make me look really good at my job”.  I saw Dr. Rubin afterward.  Apparently Concord OB must send off the ultrasound images to Brigham and Women hospital to read and then write a report up (it wasn’t really clear why the doctors at the practice weren’t able to just do that).  The report he read from the Brigham said it would appear as though I am a complete placenta previa (placenta completely covering the cervix opening) and he started spouting off things like “possible bed rest, bleeding complications, unlikely for placenta to move at this point, C-section delivery at 37 weeks, possible preterm delivery, high risk OB” etc.  In other words he kinda freaked me out!  He recommended that I see a high risk doctor called a perinatologist in two weeks to have them perform another ultrasound and have a consult.  I guess Emerson can handle me delivering at 34 weeks but if something were to happen before then requiring them to delivery early (i.e. bleeding complications) they would have me transferred to MGH or Brigham.  Of course googling “placenta previa” brings up a bunch of horror stories so I am trying not to do that.  Best case scenario with complete placenta previa would be no bleeding or bed rest complications and an early C-section delivery at 37-38 weeks.  Worst case scenario would be uncontrolled bleeding leading to extended bed rest and an even earlier C-section, resulting in a premature delivery and baby.

I weighed in at 141 lbs – up about 9 lbs from start.  Next appointment with normal OB is 9/8/14.  First appointment with perinatologist is 8/25/14.
