Noah has been waking up several times a night for the past two nights because he has rolled from his tummy to his back. Since he’s been a tummy sleeper since 5 weeks of age (yes, we know about the SIDS risk – we waited until he was picking his head/neck up and moving it), he doesn’t know how to fall asleep on his back (without being swaddled – from which he always broke free). His little arms and legs are too active – he was literally stomping his feet into the mattress for an hour straight last night. It seemed he was close to falling asleep when he had his thumb in his mouth, his issie blankie in hand and his eyelids were definitely drooping, but then his hand would drop from his face and he would startle himself awake.
Is it too early to sleep train him?!? We don’t want to keep repositioning him throughout the night and teach him to think that rolling from his tummy to his back means attention from us, but seriously we all need some rest and by turning him back over we at least get SOME sleep! I’m starting to rethink moving him to the crib as he rarely pulled this in the co-sleeper (probably because he filled most of the space!). Hopefully he learns to roll from his back to his tummy soon (or learns how to sleep un-swaddled on his back). If he has a good stretch of uninterrupted sleep (more than 3 hours) I wouldn’t care so much, but his little brain needs sleep (not to mention mama and dada need sleep as well)! This is like having a newborn all over again…oy.
