At least one of us is sleeping. Noah’s sleep luckily hasn’t been affected by the addition of Will to our family. He’s been able to sleep through Will’s whines, yells and often screams. Meanwhile, I have to wear an earplug in one ear to help drown out Will’s little grunts (and farts). Amazingly, I don’t think he is as loud a sleeper as Noah was at this age. We put Will to sleep on his tummy a lot earlier than we did with Noah so I think that has helped immensely.
It’s truly amazing how one can function on so little sleep. I don’t even remember what it feels like to sleep a solid 8 hours without interruption (hell I don’t even know if I have slept 4 hours straight without waking up). He is pretty consistent with his feeding schedule and eats during the day at least every 2-3 hours. He typically wakes up every 3-4 hours to eat at night as well. As opposed to Noah, who was consistently “sleeping through the night” at 7 weeks old, Will has only slept 6 hours straight two times. Sleeping through the night is technically defined as 5 hours. We’re getting there. Baby steps.
Will slept a lot during the day the first 6 weeks – it seemed like all he did was eat and sleep with very little awake time. Now, at almost 3 months, he’s a little more awake, a little more aware, and a little more alert. Which translates to a harder time falling asleep at nap time and staying asleep for longer than 30-40 minutes at a time. Apparently Noah was a 40 minute napper around this age, too, until he dropped down to 2 naps during the day. I’ve been trying to put Will down to nap in his crib upstairs and it’s working in the morning for his first nap. I think we’ll move Will to his crib at night between 3-4 months old. Noah was moved at 4 months.
