Noah, you are one tough cookie.  A couple days ago you fell off of the jungle gym, scraping your chin and wounding your front top teeth in the process.  I was standing right in front of you when it happened.  I took my eyes off of you for a split second to say hi to your buddy Ryan going down the slide, and when I turned back around you were already on the ground, crying, with blood dripping down your lip.  It was the scariest moment for me – I had no idea what to do.  All I saw was blood and all I heard were your cries.  I didn’t know if your teeth had been knocked out, if you had bitten through your lip, or if you had smacked your head.  I felt completely helpless.  I saw the other moms looking at us and probably silently thanking god it wasn’t their kid.

You were very upset, rightfully so, and I also couldn’t stop crying.  I pressed a burp cloth to your mouth to help stop the bleeding and eventually noticed that your top front tooth looked a little different than before – it looked like the one top tooth had been pressed into the gums somewhat.  You drank some water, but nothing I offered you made you feel better.  I made a frantic call to the doctor and they had an opening 15 minutes later so we hurried into the car and made our way to the doctor.  You were completely stoic in the car, you were smiling and almost laughing back there – maybe you were in shock?  The doctor examined you as best she could, but you were not too happy with someone prying into your mouth.  She recommended that we make an appointment with a pediatric dentist the next morning.  Not really too much help, but she said her daughter also had a tooth trauma at age 2 and her tooth was fine now.  She said we will likely have to feed you soft foods for a couple weeks (not fun with an already picky eater) so we went out to Roche Brothers and got you some yogurt drinks, rice pudding, lots of mac and cheese (on sale!), and a couple pouch things to test out.

Our appointment was at 10AM and we got there a little early to fill out paperwork.  The dentist was running behind schedule due to surgery and we didn’t get in to see him until after 11AM.  We tried to keep you occupied with books, toys, videos on the cell phone, and puffs, but you were getting very antsy.  The dentist was very good with you and I think you took a liking to him as well – so at least we found a dentist for you!  He said we just have to wait and see what happens with the tooth.  It was definitely a little loose and did appear to have suffered some trauma.  If it discolors in a few weeks we have to re-evaluate because that means that there was probably nerve damage and we might have to pull the tooth so as not to interfere with the secondary tooth behind it.  We will cross that bridge when we come to it – we go back to see him in a month.  Luckily he said we don’t have to worry about feeding you soft foods and to eat normally.

The night of the accident we had to keep waking you up every few hours to make sure you didn’t have a concussion or some head injury – it was a rough night for all of us and we were all dead tired the next day.  Luckily your dad took the day off to help us with the dentist appointment and hung out with us at home.
